Everybody Hates the Babysitter is the seventh episode of the first season of Everybody Hates Chris.

Synopsis[]

Julius and Rochelle plan a romantic evening out and hire a babysitter, Yvette, to watch the kids. However, Chris, who usually babysits his siblings during the day, is forced to handle the evening when Yvette continues to come and go from the apartment for some apparent errands. Meanwhile, Julius and Rochelle struggle to enjoy their evening with how poorly the restaurant's service is.

Plot[]

The episode opens with Chris talking about and shows a montage of Chris being the emergency adult and the babysitter for his brother and sister, who always asks him for things, making him care for kids before he got his own kids. After the opening credits, Chris expresses how he and his brother, Drew, love watching basketball together. However, with Tonya, being their youngest and only sister, they also have to share the TV with her, and she always gets her way.

Julius, who works two jobs, comes home tired and ready to sleep is suggested by Rochelle for them to have a night out. However, Julius responds with saying he works hard so they rather have a home, because it is free. Rochelle gets upset and storms off. However, Julius, feeling bad for what he said, encourages the idea of going out. Rochelle excitedly makes plans to call the babysitter Sheila hires. Julius questions it would be easier to have Chris babysit. However, Rochelle wants an actual babysitter as Chris only babysits during the day and she'd feel more at ease if an adult watches them at night.

They meet Yvette and Rochelle tells her about the chicken in the oven for the kids' dinner. The boys will be watching the basketball game while Yvette plans to french-braid Tonya's hair. Julius privately speaks to Chris and tells him; he does not want anything to interfere with their night off and to keep an eye on the babysitter and to handle things. He hands Chris $10 in emergency money, just in case.

Julius and Rochelle go to a restaurant, he tries to avoid any stress or confronting issues with the poor customer service to make their night perfect. The restaurant refused to accept a coupon he saved as the coupon did not cover their particular order. The manager then makes things stressful for them as their order was wrong and were asked to make a separate order of coleslaw since Rochelle's meal does not come with one and they have a strict "no sharing policy."

Meanwhile, at home, Yvette gets a phone call and suddenly leaves, saying she will be right back and leaving Tonya's hair unfinished. She comes back with a baby, which is her child. Tonya then gets hungry, only for Yvette to realize she forgot about the chicken in the oven, which got burnt. She leaves again to get the kids food, asking Chris to watch the baby. The baby's father, Mario, comes to look for Yvette. He takes the baby and leaves, telling Chris to let Yvette know he will be at his mother's house with the baby. Yvette comes back with food but then leaves again to get her baby back from Mario.

Back at the restaurant, Julius and Rochelle waited almost a half-hour for a dixie cup of coleslaw, they both were very annoyed. But Julius still tries to take it easy as he still is determined to make the night stress-free and perfect for Rochelle. When he confessed this to Rochelle, they begin to embrace until the restaurant is held up for robbery by gunned men.

Back at home, Chris continues to handle things in Yvette's absence, Drew is watching the game, and Tonya continues to annoy Chris and complaining about her hair not being finished. Tonya almost made matters worse as she attempted to call the restaurant for their parents. The phone was answered by one of the gunmen, but then Chris takes the phone from Tonya, while the gunman's partner at the restaurant takes the phone, both hanging up. Both sides scold the other partners for almost about to mess things up. Chris then answers the door to Yvette's mother, who invites herself in as they all wait for Yvette to come back.

At the restaurant, the gunmen rob everyone, and Julius argues with the one of the gunmen. However, one of them asks his partner to move on and he'll handle Rochelle and Julius. The gunman recognizes Rochelle and reveals himself to be an old friend of hers, Ricky Edwards. They catch up and to give them a break, he just asks them to just slip $20 into the bag before his partner sees them.

Meanwhile, Yvette comes back home with the baby. She and her mother argue, but Chris intervenes to get Yvette's mother to leave with the baby before his parents come back or their will be further trouble for everyone. Yvette finishes off her night and finishes braiding Tonya's hair and Chris could finally relax and continue watching the basketball game, only for it to be over and he misses the whole thing.

After the robbers left and the manager checks for everyone's safety, Chris narrates making the audience think Rochelle would praises Julius for his bravery. In reality, she actually yells at Julius for arguing with an armed robber and that he could have been killed and to next time he gets robbed, just give the robber what they want. The manager then gave Julius two coupons for a free meal for their next visit.

They come home to find everything went well. Chris decides to keep everything that happened quiet; however, Rochelle then gets the idea to hire Yvette again. Despite wanting to keep his promise to his father to handle anything and to not tell them about anything going wrong, he confesses everything that happened all night and how he did take care of everything without trying to concern them. Their anger gets directed at Yvette, with Julius declaring he was right that Chris should've babysat and demanding his money back from Yvette. Rochelle gets last line with being ready to beat up Yvette, giving Julius her wig to hold while she does so.

Trivia[]

  • Rochelle wears a wig. In the earlier episodes you can't tell she wears one until the end of the episode.
  • The basketball game Chris was watching was an NBA Game (76ers vs The Knicks). Which aired on CBS at the time.
  • This is one of very few episodes that ended with Chris doing nothing wrong. The “Everybody Hates Chris” hook is still played at the end though to imply it was still a bad ending for Chris due to having to the babysit and being stressful for him.
  • This is the first person in the series to be named Yvette. A different girl appears in the show, named Yvette, in the episode Everybody Hates Rejection, who becomes Chris's first "girlfriend."
